An exercise in creativity I found in a magazine, try it.
I make found art jewelry, therefore a big part of my process is going out into the world and finding materials. Usually it is more of a happy accident, where I get out of my car and see something on the ground in a parking lot pick it up and put it in my pocket for later. Sometimes I have a specific idea for a certain material, like the beads I make from plastic milk cartons, and I don’t even have to go looking. Instead I just open up a tray of Oreos and finish off my milk. But there are certain places I return to again and again where I can find new inspiration every time. One of these places is tucked underneath the streets of Long Beach along a concrete riverbed. There is no end to what you can find there: bones, shells, bits of plastic, rusted metal, tons of glass in many colors, and the occasional shopping cart abandoned in the water growing green slimey moss to feed a family of ducks. The possibilities are endless. On days when I’m feeling uninspired or in need of a little adventure I grab a couple of ziploc bags one empty for hard stuff, one with some paper towel cushions for soft delicate things, jump in my car and head over here for a nice long walk. Sure, I get a few funny looks from the people passing by on the bike path while I am crouched down digging in the dirt putting trash in my pockets, but that’s what comes with the territory when buying prefab pendants from Micheals just doesn’t hit the spot for you.

The recent “Late for Meeting” reminded the Internet how much it loved disturbing, naked men wobbling down the streets. The creator of the gyrating man talks about finding gold in glitches.

Long Statement necklace made from an assemblage of found materials that I painted and encased in resin. This piece includes a piece of broken mirror from the dresser my mother had growing up, and then I had for my childhood. Lichen from my favorite place where I camp in the Sierra Nevadas every year. A washer I found on the ground. And beads I make myself from recycled plastic milk containers which I hand cut, paint, and encase in resin. Each of my pieces includes a part of me because they are all made from souvenirs I have collected in daily life. If you would like to see more of my jewelry click on the photo to visit my shop.
